Nose Job Surgery

Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving some aspect of the nose. The surgery can be undertaken to change the look of the nose or to improve breathing through the nose. Since rhinoplasty surgery is often difficult to perform, it is imperative to clearly define your goals and understand that some of the goals may have to be compromised to ensure that you can still breathe through your nose at the end of surgery.

It is important that any rhinoplasty surgery leaves a patient with the ability to breathe through their nose. Unfortunately, sometimes a patient’s desire for a certain aesthetic outcome can create difficulty with nasal breathing. It is imperative that patient’s understand that although there is a certain look they are trying to attain, this may not be possible.

Some common questions about rhinoplasty are listed below. What is a rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty refers to any procedure which forms the nose. This can be a procedure aimed at changing the function of the nose (improving breathing) or changing the appearance (cosmetic rhinoplasty). In either case, the underlying structure and ability to breathe must be preserved. There is no point in creating a nose which looks perfect but does not allow air to flow.

What type of anesthesia is needed for nasal surgery? The nose is a very sensitive structure with many different nerves providing innervations. Because of this, a deep intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is needed to undergo any type of rhinoplasty procedure. In some cases, cartilage must be taken from the rib to recreate lost structure. In these cases, an overnight stay in the hospital may be necessary.

It is important to talk with an experienced facial plastic surgeon or plastic surgeon if you are considering rhinoplasty surgery. Some practices will incorporate digital imaging technology to illustrate what you might expect after surgery.
