What you did not know about Supplemental Dental Insurance

Supplemental dental insurance is something most people don’t know anything about. They people assume that their medical coverage for dental care at their work is sufficient, but that isn’t the case. In reality, dental insurance at work only takes care of preventive care, such as teeth cleaning, prophylactics, x-rays, it does not cover major problems. Major dental problems may not be covered by your health coverage or dental insurance plans.

This is where supplemental dental insurance is most needed. In reality, dental insurance is expensive and can be costly to fix problems. Dental insurance by itself is cheap, because the idea is that teeth problems are preventable with good hygiene, and expensive coverages are not necessary.

Supplemental dental insurance is the type of insurance that can cover the cost of crowns, bridges, endodontics which is a disease related to the root of the teeth and periodontics, which is a condition wherein your gums are infected.

Supplemental dental insurance is quite cheap. Finding an insurance plan that covers supplemental dental insurance is easy, but you must request it. Don’t assume it’s available. Most companies offer supplemental dental insurance, and if so, take advantage of the opportunity.

National insurance carriers do offer supplemental dental insurance that allow you to choose your own dentist. “Open Panel” is the type of coverage within a supplemental dental insurance plan that allows you to pick your own dentist. “Closed panel” is an option that forces you to pick a dentist from a list. Most supplemental dental insurance plans force you to pick through a list.

There are two kinds of closed panel supplemental dental insurance plans. The first closed panel is termed the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). PPO options have lower premiums if you choose from a pre-selected list.

In the second closed panel type, which is termed Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO), you are restricted in your choice and can only get a dentist from a list supplied by the participating dentist. In emergency situations, there are considerations that are given. Insurance companies that offer supplemental dental insurance give approvals that allow you to be treated for emergencies.

There a few options to pay for coverage, either percentage of services, or prepaying for the treatment in advance. Another option is to pay for the treatment after the treatment is completed.

Regardless of payment options, supplemental dental insurance preempts unexpected costs that may occur and allows you to be covered for dental problems that are outside of routine hygiene.
